The Forestnymph

April 2015

 A concept about

The reinterpretation of the tree of life in clothing.

Inspired by trees and their roots.

Using knitting technique of the old fashioned Gansey ( Fisherman's Jersey).

Inspiration

The assigment was to create a piece inspired by the old gansey ( fishermen's sweater)

For this project I have developed my knitting skills (machine knitting)

During the process I have researched different knitting techniques such as:
cables, open knits and freestyle knitting.

This picture inspired me to experiment with cable techniques that looked like 'tree roots'.

This picture inspired me to experiment with different tensions of cables.

The roots were the inspiration for my 'freestyle root knitting experiment'

Inpiration for what the 'end of the roots' would look like.

First inspiration of the forestnymph.

She protects the forest.

She is soft from the outside,

but dark on the inside

Inspiration for the

'root knitting'

Length is key!

The dementor reminded me as a 'dark side' of the forestnymph.

It's appearance, length and thin bottom defined the silhouette I wanted to create

Experiments

Root knitting experiment

Stages from knitting machine to endresult with large 'root' on front.

('root' filled with insulating tube)

Prints from latex cable experiment.

Printed with acrylic paint.

Knitting experiment.

Left side: latex experiment

Right side: silicon rubber experiment

Knitting experiment.

Dipped in siliconrubber.

To create 'heaviness' (the opposite of open 'root ends' )

Knitting experiment.

Dipped in polyester resin

Creating cables with latex.

Created with a self made mold.

Drawing of knitting idea

Firm at the top, thin at the bottom (just like tree roots)

Having fun with 'creating cables'

Sketches

Sketches for cable placement and shape

Knitting process

I created the dress mostly by 'freestyle knitting'.

The important thing was for the dress to be solid at the top and sheer at the bottom.
